Cool Stories for When The Planet Gets Hot is a biennial competition of short art videos that address climate change initiated by the international curatorial platform ARTPORT_making waves. This presentation is an anthology of videos from the first iteration in 2007 until the most recent in 2014. Videos in the series focus on topics ranging from the melting of glaciers to the looming crisis in agriculture and food production. Housed in a shipping container, these images and stories link the local plot of land that is Socrates Sculpture Park to a larger global dialogue about climate change, rehabilitation, and sustainability.
ARTPORT_making waves is an international curatorial platform that raises awareness about climate change through exhibitions, performances, residencies, and educational programs, linking the arts, science, and politics. It was founded in 2006 by Corinne Erni and Anne-Marie Melster.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents LANDMARK, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. LANDMARK directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.
